Capsule wardrobe calculator: how many outfits your pieces make

Five tops, three bottoms, one dress, two pairs of shoes and one layer make 64 outfits, as long as everything goes with everything. The calculator runs the numbers for your own pieces and shows why a small wardrobe in a tight palette works harder than a full closet of one-offs.

How the math works

Every top can go with every bottom, and dresses and jumpsuits count as complete outfits. That total is multiplied by your pairs of shoes and by your layer options, worn or not. With 5 × 3 + 1 = 16 outfits, 2 pairs of shoes and 1 layer: 16 × 2 × 2 = 64.

What makes the math hold up in real life

  • A short palette: two or three neutrals and one or two colors. A piece outside the palette goes with few others and drags the count down.
  • Plain basics: one print per outfit is plenty.
  • Matching formality: tailored trousers and beach shorts do not pair with the same pieces.
